DICK BORKOWSKI

Richard P. Borkowski, Ed. D., C. M. A. A. is a Sport and Recreation Safety Consultant in Narberth, Pennsylvania. He served as the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at the Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania for 33 years. He has been involved in the area of sport and recreation safety as an author, speaker, expert witness and consultant for 37 years.

Over 300 of his 400 published articles have dealt with safety and the legal responsibilities of coaches and teachers. He wrote a monthly safety column for Coaches Legal Report, the National Athletic Director and the Coach’s Letter. J. Weston Walch Publications in 1991 published his first book on safety in sport. LRP Publications published his second book, The School Sports Safety Handbook, in May 1998. His third book, The Athletic Administrator’s Scheduling Handbook was published in April of 2001. A sport risk management manual was published in June 2003 for the southwestern educational service district in Washington State. He presently writes for Athletic Management Magazine, Managing School Athletics, Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director and Fitness Management Magazine. He also contributes on a regular basis to the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union web site. He served as the chairman of the United States Rugby Union’s Risk Management Committee for four years.

From 1960 until 1993, he served as the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at The Episcopal Academy, a K-12 prep school outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. . His duties included the administration of 115 interscholastic teams and clubs, coached by 110 individuals. His experience includes the evaluation of athletic equipment and facilities. He served as head football, wrestling and rugby coach as well as coach of various junior teams such as soccer, swimming, gymnastics, basketball and softball. He founded and directed the school's physical education program, the girls athletic program, the intramural program, the weight-training program, playgrounds and the summer day camp. He directed the camp program for over 20 years. He also served as a head counselor at a residence camp for over ten years.

He received his degree in physical education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, in 1959, a master’s degree in athletic administration 1963 and a doctorate in athletic administration and supervision, and Sport History/Sociology in 1979, from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Some of his awards include being named Athletic Director of the month by the National Athletic Director. In 1989, He was elected into his college's Football Hall of Fame; in 1993, his high school inducted him into their Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Episcopal Academy Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the first active Episcopal Academy teacher to receive the Bishop William White Award for service in and beyond the classroom.

In 1991he was accepted as a "Certified Athletic Administrator." This recognition was based on career achievements and competitive examination. He is a certified playground safety inspector (CPSI). In 1993, he received awards from both the boy and girl's Inter-Academic Athletic Associations for service. In the same year, he received the first endowed "Richard P. Borkowski Coaching Award." In 1998, he was selected “Person of the Year, by the Inter-Ac League. In 2004 he received the “Distinguished Service Award” from The Episcopal Academy.

In 2003 the National Interscholastic Athletic Association recognized him as a “Certified Master Athletic Administrator,”(C.M.A.A.).

In May of 2005, West Chester University presented him with a “Distinguished Alumni Award.”
